The Land Rover Defender: Meet the SUV That Launched the Land Rover Brand

The Defender Legacy 

The Defender has been a staple in the Land Rover lineup for decades. However, appreciating its history as the original Land Rover requires traveling back to 1878 when the Rover Company Limited opened its doors in Britain. Manufacturing automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles throughout the early 1900s, the Rover Company built its reputation around luxury and ingenuity. However, those same characteristics caused problems for the manufacturer after World War II, when demand for high-end models plummeted. The company needed a saving grace. 

Taking a cue from the growing popularity of four-wheel drive SUVs like the Willys Jeep, the Rover Company introduced the Land Rover Series I in 1948. The Series I made a lasting impression because of its modern styling and four-wheel drive capability. Its early success confirmed the automaker’s instincts and led to the SUV’s evolution with the Series II (1958-1971) and Series III (1971-1985). 

Despite the success of the Series III, the Rover Company recognized there was room for improvement. The manufacturer turned to its successful Range Rover for inspiration and introduced the Land Rover One Ten in the early 1980s with a few significant updates. With the Range Rover’s coil spring suspension and a center differential that offered permanent four-wheel drive capability, the Land Rover One Ten introduced drivers to enhanced performance, improved ride quality, and a far more comfortable and modern cabin. So, where does the Defender fit into the story?  

The Land Rover One Ten was eventually joined by the Land Rover Ninety and Land Rover One Two Seven. However, the growing number of Land Rover models made using the Land Rover name for both a vehicle and the company confusing. In 1991, the Land Rover SUV was rebranded as the Defender, making room for new models like the Range Rover and Discovery under the larger Land Rover brand.

Defender 90: Land Rover’s Urban Adventurer

Instantly recognizable by its subcompact footprint and two-door design, the Defender 90 starts the iconic lineup as Land Rover’s urban adventurer. The SUV is designed to adapt to any situation, making it versatile and practical. Its smaller footprint and three-engine lineup guarantee its agility and responsiveness in any condition, whether navigating rush-hour traffic or venturing beyond the city limits. When the workweek ends, the Defender 90 never misses a beat, thanks to its high ground clearance and four-wheel drive capability that ensures it’s always ready to venture beyond the pavement. 

The Defender 90 has Land Rover’s signature styling, from its boxy silhouette, confident stance, and sculpted grille to its luxurious interior with seating for five. The leather seats are plush, and the winged headrests on the 2025 model showcase Land Rover’s keen attention to detail. Fortunately, this focus stretches beyond the tactile to technologies and functional features. We see this in the fold-and-slide passenger seat that offers easier accessibility into the second row, which folds flat to maximize the 58.3 cu.ft. of cargo space. Technology is prominent throughout the cabin, including a vast digital landscape stretching from the Interactive Driver Display to the center touchscreen with the Pivi Pro infotainment system. 

Defender 110: Land Rover’s Compact Powerhouse 

The Defender 110 builds on the same premium packaging as its subcompact sibling but has a slightly larger footprint and a greater penchant for performance. As a four-door compact SUV, the Defender 110 has a larger cabin that broadens its appeal by offering an optional third row with seating for up to seven. The cabin exudes luxury in either configuration, from the plush seating and easy-access features to the functional storage areas. Cargo space is also plentiful, with the two-row Defender 110 offering 78.8 cu.ft. and the three-row yielding 69 cu.ft.. 

Beyond its larger footprint, the Defender 110 differentiates itself with its heartbeat, diverse trim lineup, and rugged capability. The 2025 Defender 110 includes six trims, including the high-performance OCTA. Each trim has distinct styling and, more importantly, an exclusive heartbeat. For example, the Defender S relies on a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 to deliver 296 hp, while the middle trims are powered by a 3.0L turbocharged I-6 with 395 hp or a supercharged V8 with 493 hp.

Land Rover expands the Defender 110’s engine lineup with the 5.0L P500 supercharged V8 and the OCTA-exclusive 4.4L P635 turbocharged V8 mild hybrid. The supercharged 5.0L V8 produces 493 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, while the 4.4L pushes the Defender 110 to new heights. The turbocharged heartbeat makes 626 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, making the Defender 110 OCTA the most potent in the family. Beyond its on-road performance, the Defender 110 OCTA is also ready for life beyond the pavement. It boasts a 3.3-foot wading depth and cutting-edge technologies like a 3D Surround Camera and Wade Sensing to instill confidence when navigating water crossings. 

Defender 130: Land Rover’s Largest Road Warrior 

The Defender 130 is the largest in the Defender family, with an extended layout that offers two-row and three-row configurations and seating for up to eight. Like its siblings, the Defender 130 features a premium cabin that exudes opulence and exquisite details. The leather seats are plush, with heated and cooled captains chairs available for the second row. Most notably, the Defender 130 is easily customizable, with trim-specific options like the Defender 130 Outbound offering a two-row layout with seating for five and 89 cu.ft. of cargo space. 

Aside from its configurable cabin and diverse trims, the Defender 130 delivers the performance expected of the Land Rover brand. The SUV offers a three-engine lineup, a premium air suspension with adaptive dynamics, and an enhanced traction control system for maximum off-road capability. The Defender 130’s base powerplant sets the benchmark, with the 2.0L turbocharged inline-four producing 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Like its siblings, the Defender 130’s next powertrain option is Land Rover’s proven 3.0L turbocharged inline-six, which makes 395 horses and 406 lb-ft of torque. From there, the 5.0L P500 supercharged V8 offers the most power, with an output of 493 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. This heartbeat makes pushing the Defender 130 to its limits engaging and exciting on any terrain.
