October’s Driving Good Youth & Mentor Spotlight is Asher Petersen!

Asher is a Service Technician Apprentice at ONYX Automotive under the brands Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover. Asher has been with ONYX for nearly two years in the H+H University program.

Asher was a home-schooled student and learned of the H+H University Program in the summer of 2022. Asher’s mentor is Cody Stickney who is a Service Technician at Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover Omaha.

Q&A with Asher

What do you like the most about working at ONYX?

I enjoy that most people are caring and willing to help each other out. Also, I am so glad to have the opportunity to be in the H+H University Apprenticeship Program and have paid automotive training through H+H. I am grateful for my amazing teachers, Chris D. and Bob K. Additionally, I like that H+H values family and I love the H+H Vala’s Pumpkin Patch Day event.

Is there a person or a moment at work that has had a positive impact on you?

My mentor, Cody, has had a huge positive impact on me. He has taught me everything from simple tasks like replacing brakes, to complex ones like replacing head gaskets. Another person who has had a positive impact on me is Corey. He’s always hardworking and helpful in the shop, which motivates me.

What new skills have you obtained during your apprenticeship?

Cody and my HHU teachers have helped me improve my understanding of vehicle mechanics and electronics. I have learned patience, how to handle stress in tough situations, and learned great teamwork skills.

Tell us one fun fact about you.

I come from a family of gear heads. I carry on my Grandpa Gary’s legacy. He loved all things automotive, especially muscle cars. He built up AMC AMX’s and drag-raced them. He was an honest mechanic who helped people in need. I also like vintage cars and collecting stereos and vinyl records.
